Day 11
While waiting for breakfast this morning one of our group built a snowman from the 2-3 inch snow we received overnight. It is a beautiful snow but will put a damper on our plans for today. This morning as usual we were served a great buffet breakfast. It is beginning to seem like all we do is eat. Sue opted to have a little more healthy breakfast this morning while Gene ate the usual eggs etc. but in smaller quantities. One thing they have served here for breakfast that we like is a corn tamale. It is so good Also there pastries are very good. It is too snowy to get to the high point on the rim so we will just take a quick trip to see as much as we can safely. The Copper Canyon is actually a combination of 5 canyons connected together. We did see some spectacular views but really not what we expected due to the weather. We returned to the hotel for a quick lunch and said goodbye to our very friendly wait staff and boarded the train for Bahuichivo and then a bus to Cerocahui where we will visit a Jesuit Mission boarding school for girls. The hotel we are staying has only wood stoves for heat, and very small one. We did not spend much time in our rooms but they did supply us with several blankets. The stoves were so small they would burn up the wood in about 1 to 1 ½ hours. They have 2 large fireplaces in the gathering room so we spent quite a bit of time there. . We walked over to the church and on to the little town square. The small stores are called Abbaritos which in Spanish means general store. They sell some food products and other various items. A tiende is a variety store and we could never really see any difference. We went back to the hotel and all gathered around the fire place waiting for the dinner hour. For dinner we had onion soup, fish, salad and for dessert we had fresh mangoes in a sauce. We slept quite comfortable with an extra blanket.
