February 3 Day 13
We are on the road at 8:10 and headed for Guasave, MX. Guasave is a prosperous city amid lush farmlands producing bumper crops of tomatoes, bell peppers, squash, eggplant, lettuce and other greens and fruits. It is a beautiful sunny day but cool. We have run into road construction just out of town. It is a very rough and rocky two-lane road and cars are passing the caravan. The construction did not last long but even the 4-lane road is narrow and very rough. Traffic is pretty heavy. We saw a couple of individuals making bricks. Seems like there are quite a few individuals that do that. We are in an agricultural area now. We passed a field of squash or melons of some kind and a big field of Agaves which is the main ingredient in Tequila. Tequila is only made here in Mexico. Everything is irrigated and looks very healthy. Now we are passing a box factory that makes boxes for shipping agricultural products. We have traveled 115 miles so far and have seen crops all along the way. The Mexican people stop along the way to watch the caravan pass by. They really do like the Americans. We see several huge green houses and areas covered with plastic to protect the small plants. In this area are some workers in the field and near by a compound of barracks where the workers live. Now we see a field that is flooded for rice or some other crop that grows in water and rows and rows of nut and fruit trees. We also see some feed lots on a much smaller scale than we see in the US. All along the way we continue to see the very poorly built homes the lower class Mexicans live in and yet are reminded how happy they seem to be with their lifestyle. We often see individuals selling their vegetables and fruit along the highway. They use any means they can find to support the family. And all of a sudden we are out of the fertile land and into a desert type terrain with sand, sagebrush and cactus. We arrived at our campground about noon at the Hotel Moro Playa Las Glorias and RV Park. This is a very nice park and right on the beach. After a quick lunch we walked along the beach which has many many sea shells in unusual shapes and colors. So of course you know Sue had to pick up some. It is great fun. We needed to go to a grocery store so at 4 pm we went with another couple to Ley’s and followed another car-full of people. We had directions but managed to get lost. We didn’t realize how far away it was either so by the time we found our way and got back to the campground we were late for the Mexican Dinner on the Beach but not too late. The dining hall is a very large grass covered shelter called a Palapa. It is so beautiful and It was very good food: Shrimp fixed in about 5 different ways including one that was stuffed and wrapped in bacon. yum, yum. Baked fish that was smothered in a cheese sauce and slightly spicy with salad and rice. For dessert we had Flan. It was an “all you can eat” meal and very good. We also had music and dancing provided.
