We traveled up the south shore of Cape Breton Island, through Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Here the mountains are much higher but are completely covered with trees unless we go through one of the many little towns along the way where trees have been cleared. The towns are very small and very close together. Most have an access road down to the shore. Very few of the towns have a road sign letting us know its name so we rely on information on businesses or churches to figure out where we are. Also lots of the little towns are not on the map. Consequently we go sometimes quite a ways without knowing exactly where we are. Such was the case when we completely missed the turn-off to Cape North which is the northern most point of Nova Scotia. By the time we figured out where we were it was too late to turn around. We could not find much info about that area so decided we didn’t miss much. At the point where the road turned back south, we were up quite high overlooking the Gulf of Lawrence and here we saw some of the most beautiful scenery of anywhere. These are the pictures we see in the advertisements for Nova Scotia. Also this is a great whale watching area and from way, way up high we could see whales blowing water and just barely make out the shape of one occasionally. We would not have known they were there but others were watching them with binoculars. Our picture is from so far away you cannot really see it.
