On leaving Iron Creek Campground we are in a heavily forested area of Lodge Pole Pines. These trees have very short and dense branches. The lower branches die and fall off as the tree matures. We can see some areas where there was a fire and now the land is covering with new saplings. As we come into Watson Lake it is raining lightly. We only visited the “Signpost Forest.” This was started in 1942 by a soldier who was working ont the construction of the Alaska Highway. Travelers are still adding signs to the collection which numbered over 54,000 by mid June, 2005. Visitors are still encouraged to add signposts. It is quite a site. We have been through some areas today where road work is being done on bridges. The majestic Cassiar Mountains are visable. We stopped to view a beautiful water fall, Rancheria Falls, in the area. We stayed at a campground that was advertised as free. Mukluk Annie’s also have a Salmon Bake there and a breakfast in the morning. Both were much more that we wanted to spend for meals so we just stayed for free. We had a beautiful view of the Teslin lake from our kitchen window.
