We are back on Highway 1, the Alaska Highway heading towards Fairbanks but we won’t make it there again. It is still over 300 miles just to the Alaska border. The highway follows along the Yukon River as it travels north. The highway is pretty rough and we are going through more road construction. We can see the Kluane Mountains in the distance. They are snow-capped and very majestic. Most of the black spruce trees in this area are dead or dying from the Black Spruce Beetle which begin infecting them in the 90’s. Now we are in an area where the highway was completely redone in 2004 but already they are making major repairs. It was proof to us of how quickly the road here deteriorates in this climate. Of interest to the Johnson family, we crossed a creek named Swede Johnson Creek. We spent the night at Lake Creek Campground which is a Canadian government park. We can stay at any of these campgrounds for $12 per night. There are no services but we can do that OK once in a while.
