6/2Crossing the Canadian border was easy. They ask few questions, then took our tag numbers and we were on our way. The mountains here are a continuation of the Cascade Range in Washington. They are not high mountains and there are very few pull offs so the pictures we take are from inside the RV as we go down the road.. Usually these pictures are not very good. The highway travels along the Fraser River. This is a wide river and not clear water as we saw in Washington. We stopped at a site called Hells Gate. At this point the river is quite narrow and so the water is very deep and runs quite fast through the canyon. More than twice as much water flows through Hells Gate as passes over Niagara Falls. In 1882 when they were building first the railroad and then the highway it was quite a challenge to get through this area. To transport supplies for the railway a stern wheel steamer made it way through Hells Gate hauled by ropes attached to the canyon wall with bolts. Now there is an Airtram which goes across the river and down 500 feet to a restaurant and shopping area (tourist trap). The also have a small museum and 3 short movies explaining the life cycle of the salmon which swim upstream in the Fraser River, the construction of the railway and construction of fishways which make it easier for the Salmon to swim up river through the extremely strong current of Hells Gate for spawning. After leaving Hells Gate we made our way to the town of Cache Creek where we spent the night at Brookside Campground.
