Next we traveled just a short distance to Highlands, NJ to see Twin Lights of the Navesink, a light house which sits on a hill 200 feet above sea level. It has aided in navigation of the waterway between New Jersey and NYC since 1828. For more information go to: http://www.twin-lights.org/. While looking for this light house we saw Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook which, on a clear day, has a scenic panoramic view of 4 of New York Cities 5 boroughs, the World Trade Center site and the Empire State Building. This is also a memorial to honor the 147 people from this county who lost their lives in the 911 tragedy as well as all those who helped in the rescue. There is a statue of an eagle, America’s symbol of freedom, clutching an actual beam from one of the fallen towers. By this time it looked very much like rain so we decided to just forget about finding a fireworks show and headed home. We watched a little of the NYC spectacular on TV. We have seen many excellent fireworks shows while we have been on the road that it is hard to see anything different.
