Then headed for the Sandy Hook Lighthouse located in the Gateway National Recreation Area. It is a barrier beach peninsula at the northern tip of the New Jersey Shore. The Sandy Hook light house, built in 1764, was constructed to curtail the growing number of shipwrecks. Today it is the oldest lighthouse still in use.
